Today is the National ‘Day of Silence’

Today is the day! The annual “Day of Silence’ is taking place in over 4,000 schools with more than 450,000 participants in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. It’s the day that GLBT students and their allies make their voices ‘heard’… or not heard.

Day of Silence is not about being ‘in your face’ to others. It’s about making our schools safer for GLBT students and others who are harassed daily for who they are and who they love. Students take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the harassment and discrimination - in effect, the silencing - experienced by GLBT students and their allies.

If you know of anyone participating in the Day of Silence, either as a GLBT student themselves, or as an ally, please acknowledge them for the courage and strength it takes to stand up for who they are and what they’re trying to do.

It’s time to make our schools a safer place for everyone! Help end the silence!
