Of Ghosts, Gremlins & Air Compressors

Yes, I know. I promised to talk about last weekend’s adventures with my sister Amy’s visit and attic work. Don’t worry.. I’ll add that in tomorrow. But, this topic cannot wait…

Last night, about 10:30, when the house was quiet and we were happily sliding into sleep, we were rudely jolted from bed by a loud, obnoxious noise. No, it wasn’t Millie snoring at our feet. And, it wasn’t Jeni’s radio in the other room. It was something that sounded a bit like someone attempting to cut through our ceiling with a chain saw.

To our shock, after moment of fumbling for clothes and light, we realized it was the air compressor in the attic!

Judy had been working up there earlier in the evening, but said she turned it off before coming down. She flipped the switch to the off position. She thought she unplugged it, too. But, upon going upstairs, she realized it was plugged in. Hmm…

So… she unplugged it and happily, though a bit warily, we went back to bed.

Now… Judy leaves for work mighty early.. 5:15am to be exact. I get up and have breakfast with her every day, make some coffee and see her off. Then, I go back to bed for another 20 minutes before getting ready for work. Except, THIS morning I was rudely jolted out of bed… again… by that dang air compressor turning on!

I sprang out of bed and ran up the stairs to see the air compressor running… the ON/OFF switch in the ON position, but… the PLUG OUT OF THE OUTLET! —- o.0

I switched it off and it went still. (As did I)

Then, I nonchalantly turned tail and hustled back downstairs with my mind whirling around the events.

Now… I suppose it can be anything, really. ie, maybe Judy was still partly asleep when she went upstairs the first time and didn’t really unplug it. But… I saw it unplugged this morning. Okay… uhm… maybe there’s a generator attached to the compressor that stores power for a bit. Hmm, could be.. I didn’t read the ENTIRE manual. (mental note: check on that)

Or… we’ve got otherworldly guests who like to play with loud power tools. *shivers* (It IS possible. I mean, we KNOW we’ve got ghost MICE in the house. Just come over sometime and watch Isa run up and down the length of the house, chasing something that only SHE seems to be able to see. And, Millie, pouncing on something in the hallway that isn’t really there.)

Okay, I don’t mind ghosts living with us, as long as they play with just the compressor and NOT the nail guns or table saws. I can handle that. I can deal. Really… I can.

Tonight, we get to work up in the attic again. I need to make a stop at Home Depot on the way home to pick up some materials/tools. Let’s see… we need 8d nails, a plumb bob, a couple new drill bits, some holy water, a rosary, a carbine-tipped cross with flashlight attachment and a little old lady who will tell us ‘Don’t Run to the LIGHT! Stay AWAY FROM THE LIGHT!!!’… yeah, that should work.

Happy (ghost)hunting!
