Floors & Doors & Ceilings… Oh My!
Okay… so, I’ve been slacking lately. We’ve been so busy that I have’nt had time to keep up with the online remodeling journal. I know I’m missing a couple of steps in between, like Jeni and Judy working with the rolls of insulation batting. But, I’m at least putting up the work we did this past weekend. (I’ll see about getting up the rest later this week… PROMISE!)
Well, with the insulation completed (with the exception of closing off the kneewalls, which will wait until we’re through behind those), Judy and I have begun working on the fun stuff… framing in doors for the closet and storage areas and repairing the floor. (more info below…)

Repairing the floor:
The attic floor is a wonderful, wide-planked old wood that’s looking very grungy right now. A few boards have been damaged, cracked, splintered or were cut away when we have the electrical upgraded in the house last year.
We want to keep the wood that is there and just clean it up and refinish it. It’s the charm of our attic, so it stays. Well, when replacing the OLD boards, we can’t just buy new boards to use… they wouldn’t have the same look when finished. So, I began pulling out boards from behind one of the kneewalls (our smaller storage room), to use in replacing the damaged ones in the main area.
Since Judy is the expert at repairing and restoring older wood, I’m leaving the main floor repair up to her. As with all the jobs we’ve had on this house, some of it is going smooth, some of it isn’t. But, it’s coming along, as you can see in the photos above. Notice those lovely kneepads she’s wearing? My two years of volleyball have paid off for her! At least she can save her knees on this job!
Framing in doors:
As for my job… Well, since Judy is busy with the floor, I’ve been working on framing in doors. We need an access door to get behind the kneewalls, a door for the storage area, doors for the closet, a built-in bookcase on the short kneewall and a built-in LARGE bookcase next to the steps.
So far, I’ve got the closet opening and storage area doors framed. I also built a ‘box’ for the ceiling fan in the center of the room. Now, I’m working on the measurements and layout of the BIG built-in bookcase next to the steps. (Hey… it takes time to get it right!)
I spent a good portion of yesterday framing in the storage room door, using all natural girl power to hammer it together. My arms are numb!!! Can you say ‘OUCH’! I knew you could.
That’s where we’re at, for now. Stay tuned for more remodeling hijinks from Jude and Jules! (We’re aiming for Fall with this project, so rush time is here!
Uffda!!
Jules
